When the Radisson Collection got in touch with me a few weeks ago to see if I’d be keen to have one of the most relaxing days ever, I actually could have cried! The idea of a spa day followed by a lovely little vegan afternoon tea could not have seemed more perfect.
There’s been a hell of a lot going on recently at work, and we’ve just moved into my in-laws house while we wait for our flat to be completed (cons of new build properties). So yeah, I really needed a spa day!
The Radisson Collection’s very own spa is called the Sleeping Beauty Salon, and is very aptly named considering I fell asleep during my second treatment, it was that relaxing. I had the choice of the spa collection packages, there are 5 to choose from and each one is designed to help you relax in a different way.
I ended up picking the ‘Botanical Collection’. The Botanical Collection features a 50 minute ‘JustBe’ Aromatherapy Back, Neck and Shoulder Massage, a 30 minute Indian Head Massage, a foot soak and a Rock Rose Gin & Tonic.
Lisa, my therapist for the day, greeted me downstairs and took me up to the salon to get started on my treatments. We started off with the foot soak (which was super tickly btw), and then I picked my essential oils for my massage. I went for the ultimate relaxation oil, Lavender with a bit of chamomile thrown in too. I didn’t realise how much my body actually needed the massage until Lisa got started. My muscles were so sore and knotted! I do a lot of driving and heavy lifting in my job, and I could feel so much tension in my shoulders being released throughout the massage. Lisa was lovely, and made sure that the pressure was perfect for me and asked if there was any areas I needed to focus more attention on too.
The Indian Head massage was when I fell asleep… I had no idea what to expect, as I’ve never had an Indian Head massage before and my goodness… it was incredible. I went for a dry massage as we were going for afternoon tea afterwards so I didn’t want oily hair, and even then it was unbelievable. I was worried I would have a Monica Gellar moment (if you know, you know). An Indian head massage focuses on massaging acupressure points on your head/scalp, and is said to relieve headaches and pressure but also improve your stress levels and your mental health. It was one of the most relaxing experiences ever. I could have sat there all day!
Instead of heading straight down to the bar for my gin & tonic, I saved it for during my afternoon tea.
Next up, it was time for the afternoon tea. I was so thrilled to find out that the Radisson Collection, Edinburgh offered a full vegan afternoon tea. A vegan afternoon tea is pretty much unheard of. Sometimes the occasional place will offer vegan options within an afternoon tea and it will be one or two of the cakes and some sandwiches but never a fully vegan menu with so much to choose from!
On the menu you’ll find a selection of sandwiches and wraps, quiche, soup, scones and four different cakes. One of the things I loved about the selection was that it wasn’t what you’d usually expect from a vegan menu. What I have often found is that vegan menu’s are boring, and unimaginative. This one was quite the opposite! The sandwiches were creative, yes, you got your standard hummus & veg one as an option, but the rest of the options were creative, and so much more than I expected! The fact they even had a vegan quiche (which i’ve never seen before) was lovely too.
We started off by picking a tea each from a pretty extensive list, I’m talking about ten loose leaf tea options. The Radisson Collection have all of the exotic options you could possibly think of. A chamomile tea would have gone down a treat after my super relaxing massage, but I think I could have actually fallen asleep if I had a cup! I also loved the look of the Star Elixir, but completely chickened out at the last moment when it came to picking teas. We were both quite boring and went for the basics. I had a black tea and Steve went for peppermint. I’m a classic black tea kind of gal, I’m addicted to drinking tea.
I was more excited to get into my Gin & Tonic if I’m being honest! I think the cocktail afternoon tea would be so much fun, that’s definitely an option I’ll go for in the future.
When the sandwiches arrived, I demolished them in about 5 seconds. The afternoon tea was my first meal of the day, and I was genuinely shocked a managed to even take a photo of them with how hungry I was.
The Jackfruit & Tomato sandwich was by far my favourite, though from the menu I thought it was going to be a wrap. Jackfruit is so versatile! I’ve only really had it cooked and hot before, so I was really excited to see what it would be like. It did not disappoint at all. I’m also not usually a big fan of beetroot, but teaming it with avocado might be the key in getting me to eat it in the future…
The quiche, soup and cakes came out next. The holy grail, the bit I’d had my eye on from the start…
The vegan quiche was really yummy. It somehow managed to get their spongey consistency that you get with eggs. The espresso cup of soup was also delicious, Steve basically downed his like a shot!
The lemon scones were my favourite part of the entire thing. I haven’t had a scone in FOREVER. Before I went vegan, they were always something I absolutely loved with a bit of cream and jam. (Did you fill in my instagram poll? It’s obviously jam then cream…) They were so fresh from the oven they were still a little warm, and they came with a vegan clotted cream. The clotted cream was made from coconut cream and complemented the lemon scones really well!
We then worked our way to the top of the stand for the cakes. The maple walnut blondie was my favourite of the day. It was super sweet and crumbly and melted in your mouth, it was to DIE for. Steve’s favourite was the avocado and chocolate fudge. I don’t really have a huge sweet tooth, so I found it really hard to make it through all of the cakes but I made sure to try a little bit of each one. Even Steve who has the biggest sweet tooth ever struggled to finish all of the cakes. They were super rich in flavour, and SUPER yummy.
I was one happy girl at the end of the day, we had such a lovely time!
Thanks to the Radisson Collection for inviting us along.
